Yellow Jacket Striped Chevrons - Antique Trade Beads (8)

Rare African trade beads that are Yellow Jacket striped chevron glass beads. The beads were made in Italy then traded to Africa in the mid-late 1800's. These Italian Chevrons beads have five layers including a white and red core with yellow and black stripes. They were made in a multi-step process where glass canes were fused, then slices were cut to reveal these lovely star patterns. The small slices are exposed to heat until the glass softens and flattens, then the hard edges become soft thus creating these lovely beads. The beads are 5mm in diameter and about 3mm thick, the colors are vibrant and the finish is glossy. The beads are in remarkably good shape for their age, but there may be small pits or chips.
