Vintage Plique-á-jour Enamel Butterfly Brooch

This is a small Italian Plique-á-jour butterfly brooch in beautiful and vibrant colors. This butterfly has fine filigree work for his wings, overlaid with enamel in aqua, green, red, and yellow. Plique ‘a Jour is a French term meaning ‘letting in daylight’. A process in which enamel is applied in wire cells, similar to cloisonné, but without a backing. As it is transparent, light easily shines through the translucent enamel causing it to appear much like stained glass. This butterfly is constructed of silver twisted filigree metal that has a gold wash, it is marked 800 for the silver content  It was made by a true artisan in Italy.
