This is a vintage Asian inspired Plique-á-jour brooch by Jan Max. This brooch was created in 1971 and has fine filigree work overlaid with enamel in yellow and red. The goldtone metal frame is in the shape of bamboo with a Chinese symbol in the center Plique ‘a Jour is a French term meaning ‘letting in daylight’. A process in which enamel is applied in wire cells, similar to cloisonné, but without a backing. As it is transparent, light easily shines through the translucent enamel causing it to appear much like stained glass. The brooch is in excellent condition.
